Brazoria County Peace Officers Association held a 5k on September 19, 2015 at MacLean Park.  Brazoria County Sheriff’s Deputies, Wade Nichols and Ulysses Velez, Co-Chairs of the event and their committee of volunteers, raised over $8000 with $3000 designated for The Mermaid Project.  The top finisher in the Women’s Division was Billie Brannan, at 28:01 and in the Men’s Division was Stephen Meier at 21:54.

Brazosport Health Foundation’s Mermaid Project provides financial assistance to women and men who are uninsured or do not have the ability to pay for a mammogram.  The mammograms must be scheduled with the Imaging Department at Brazosport Regional Health System by the patient or health care provider.

The 5K was sponsored by Kay Aplin &Family Fitness, DOW Chemical and BASF.  The 55 runners and BASF sponsored 20 youth runners received a gift bag filled with cooling towels, event shirts, pedometers and a safety whistle and light.  Each person crossing the finish line received a towel and the winners received a 16 oz. glass with the run logo and a shirt donated by Family Fitness.

This annual event has raised over $10,000 for The Mermaid project in the past years.  Deputies, Wade Nichols and Ulysses Velez, said “The event would not be possible without the generous sponsors, local businesses and runners who participate each year.  We strive to make each year bigger and better so we can increase the financial donations to The Mermaid Project.”

Al Guevara, BRHS CEO, and Judith Pepper Brazosport Health Foundation Executive Director, received the $3000 check from the Co-Chairs.  Mr. Guevara said, “Having support from the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office is very special.  Not only does the Department work tirelessly in keeping our community safe they generously donate their time and talents with this volunteer event.  Thank you for all you do.”
