Thorpe Scholarship Awarded to Local Nursing Student
was recently named the sixth recipient of the Adelaide R. Thorpe Scholarship. The Scholarship was founded in 2007 as a tribute to Mrs. Thorpe in recognition of her 60-plus years of volunteer leadership and philanthropy at Brazosport Regional Health System. Its purpose is to remove financial barriers for nursing students with demonstrated academic ability and a desire to join the nursing profession. Ms. Garcia will receive $10,000 for the two-year nursing program to cover tuition, books and some living expenses.
Ms. Garcia stated in her application, “The best aspect of this opportunity for me is BRHS’s mission statement, The Heart of Compassion
shares my same values regarding working with ill and injured patients.” Athena has an Associate Science Degree, is a licensed Veterinary Technician and has worked in emergency clinics with animals. In this capacity, Ms. Garcia found her calling to attend nursing school and work in an acute care hospital setting.
Scholarship recipients are required to attend Brazosport College’s Associate Nursing Program and upon graduation work for two years with Brazosport Regional Health System. Ms. Garcia hopes to work in the BRHS Emergency Services Department.
“Due to the overall nursing shortage in our country, the Thorpe Scholarship Fund will allow people from our area the opportunity to receive the education needed to become a nurse. We are very excited to have Athena as the sixth recipient and look forward to working with her upon graduation,” said Al Guevara, President and CEO of BRHS.
