West Brazos Golf Association - Mermaid Fund Raiser 2015

3/9/2016

Sixteen years ago, Phyllis Stedman and her group of volunteers founded the “Sock it to Cancer!” golf tournament.  This golf tournament welcomes dozens of participants for a day of fun at West Brazos Golf Course.  This year the October event hosted 60 women, the largest field ever, and raised $5000 for The Mermaid Project.

“It’s all about getting together, celebrating survivors and remembering the ones we lost while raising money for a great cause,” Stedman said.  “The Mermaid Project pays for mammograms and breast health care diagnostics at BRHS for women and men who are uninsured or financially unable to pay.  The Mermaid Project has helped hundreds in Southern Brazoria County.”

Since West Brazos Ladies Golf Association started holding the golf tournament they have raised over $60,000 for The Mermaid Project.  Phyllis Stedman credits the success of the group’s fundraising to the passion that lies behind them.  All the women volunteers want all cancer, not just breast cancer, to be eradicated.  They volunteer their time to bring awareness to the community of preventive care with annual well woman doctor visits and recommended mammograms.  They want every person who needs breast health care to have access regardless of the ability to pay.  The annual golf tournament and donation helps ensure The Mermaid Project funding is available to help.
