Adelaide R. Thorpe Scholarship FundRhonda Sexton was recently named as the first recipient of the Adelaide R. Thorpe Scholarship. The Scholarship was founded in 2007 as a tribute to Mrs. Thorpe in recognition of her 60-plus years of volunteer leadership and philanthropy at Brazosport Regional. Ms. Sexton will receive $2,500 each semester for tuition, books and some living expenses. "I‘m so appreciative to receive this scholarship. I was inspired to pursue nursing after my mom had an extended hospital stay. To see the nurses’ direct impact on her overall outlook was comforting. I hope to have that
same impact on patients by making a difficult situation more bearable," said Ms. Sexton. Scholarship recipients are required to attend Brazosport College’s nursing program and must work at Brazosport Regional Health System (BRHS) for two years following the completion of their nursing education. Ms. Sexton, who maintained a 4.0 at Brazosport College in her prerequisite classes, began the nursing program in Fall 2009.

Due to the overall
nursing shortage in our country, the Thorpe Scholarship Fund will allow young people from our area the opportunity to get the education needed to become a nurse. We are very excited that the first recipient has been named and look forward to working with her upon graduation,” said Dan Buche, President and CEO
of BRHS.
