Sisters in Touch

The Mermaid Project is working to increase breast cancer awareness among minority communities through the formation of Sisters in Touch, a faith-based grassroots initiative comprised of female community leaders.

Although the breast cancer incidence rate is approximately ten percent lower among minority women than Caucasian women, their mortality rate from the disease is higher. For example, African American women have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial and ethnic group in the United States for most cancers, and this is particularly true for breast cancer.

The American Cancer Society reports that these inequalities are thought to reflect social and economic disparities, but there is also evidence that minority women under the age of 40 have a higher breast cancer incidence rate than their Caucasian counterparts.

Brazosport Health Foundation is eager to attend various group meetings and present information about breast cancer and the importance of early detection. We do these presentations for free. Call the office to schedule a speaker for your group or organization.
